Here are the slides from my talk earlier tonight on the Internet of Things (IoT) at the Silicon Valley iPhone Developers’ Meetup at 500 Startups.  This is a trend that’s only going to accelerate over the coming decades.

The audience had a bunch of questions about privacy issues - how should information be protected in a world of pervasive sensors?  I think that’s a good question, but there is a much bigger risk.  The primary issue is not privacy, in my opinion - but what people do with malware when everything’s connected.  Embarassing people is one thing, but when actuators are influenced via embedded devices (think brakes in cars, green lights at intersections, floodgates on dams, electrical impulses in pacemakers), lives are directly at stake.

For those that are interested, I’ve started keeping a list of interesting IoT links here, including a link to Postscapes, a great site tracking the IoT.  If you’re aware of any other great online resources on the IoT, please @reply them to me on Twitter using an @robconeybeer mention.
